Vitamin K is one of the basic nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of the body. It is a fat-soluble vitamin, so some amounts can be stored in the liver. Vitamin K2 is also produced by the natural intestinal flora. However, these amounts are not sufficient to meet the body's needs. Because of this, it is necessary to provide supplemental amounts of vitamin K from foods or supplements.
Two forms of vitamin K are necessary for the proper functioning of the body. The first of these, vitamin K1, is found in almost all green vegetables. It is responsible for proper blood clotting. It allows the formation of active forms of blood coagulation factors, as well as essential anticoagulants. This keeps the body in balance and the vessels do not clump.
However, it turns out that the body is not satisfied with just this one connection. The second form, vitamin K2, is produced by certain strains of bacteria. Research shows that it plays a role in controlling calcium metabolism and bone mineralization processes.
Vitamin K deficiency in the body is mainly associated with blood clotting disorders and abnormal bone mineralization. The literature indicates that symptoms can include prolonged wound healing, osteoporosis, bowel disease and an increased risk of cancer.
