Lemons are a plant species in the Rutaceae family, most likely derived from the hybridization of a lime and a lemon. This tart-tasting fruit originates from eastern China, but is no longer found in the wild or as a cultivated plant in those areas. Lemons probably came to Europe via Arab merchants in the Middle Ages.
These citrus fruits, famous for their exceptional vitamin C content, are a remarkable source of vitamins and minerals. They boast a high content of B vitamins, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, among others. They are also rich in iron, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. The powerful antioxidants contained in the pulp allow lemons to exhibit anti-aging properties and prevent the development of disease.
Lemon juice is used both in cooking—for example, for fish—and in cosmetics—it has a mild toning, refreshing, deodorizing, and antiseptic effect.
