Not just tofu: vegan dairy
While the words "vegan" and "dairy" should never seem to be used in the same sentence, plant-based cuisine is in fact rich in products that mimic traditional animal-based dairy products and are every bit as good as taste, texture or culinary uses.
In one of our notes we have you one Overview of plant milk presented from different types of seeds, nuts, cereals and legumes: from spelt to almonds to the well-known soybean. You can buy many of them in our organic shop - and in different varieties! However, the possibilities for creating vegan alternatives to dairy don't end with plant-based milk: it's even fair to say that there isn't a popular dairy product that doesn't have a plant-based counterpart. Here are some of them!
vegetable oil
Perhaps the most controversial of the products on our list for starters. Why the controversy? Isn't vegetable butter just the most common margarine in the world? Yes and no! Most commercial margarines contain milk fat, so they are not vegan. However, purely plant-based butter - for example the Alsan butter available in our organic shop - is partly made on the basis of palm oil, which is obtained contrary to the vegan worldview. Many vegans do without it completely in favor of unrefined coconut oil - but this is known to have neither the taste nor the consistency of butter...
Soy yogurt and more
We can bet you that you wouldn't tell a soy or coconut fruit yogurt from a cow's milk yogurt just by the taste! Soyde fruit yoghurts with many flavors are a real vegan debauchery. Their consistency is in no way different from what we like traditional yoghurts for. Definitely worth a try!
Tofu: the star among plant-based cheeses
Ah, tofu. A true vegan classic and the subject of countless jokes. Is it deserved? Definitely not (well, maybe a little bit)! Although natural, unseasoned tofu that has just been taken out of the package definitely has a flavor that might not appeal to everyone (or, as the nasty people say, it has no flavor at all, just a slightly gummy consistency...), right seasoned and prepared can replace many products: from meat to eggs and of course cheese!
With tofu, you can bake a cheesecake, make a vegan version of scrambled eggs ("tofu cake"), and make delicious skewers. The neutral, only slightly soy taste is its advantage, not a disadvantage: tofu absorbs aromas and flavors of spices like a sponge, which allows it to take on a very different character depending on your needs and individual preferences!
