One of the guiding principles of a healthy diet is variety. A varied diet is essential because even the healthiest product or meal we eat all the time doesn't provide us with all the necessary nutrients. This rule is especially important for children, who often have their favorite flavors and it's difficult to convince them to try something new. However, it's worth trying, because without it, deficiencies can easily develop, which can lead to various ailments, including reduced immunity.
Breakfast for a child – an example for a parent
Of course, it's easy to say, but harder to do. There's no point in forcing your child to eat foods they don't want to. Only gentle encouragement will work, and above all, the parents' example . There's nothing more important for children !
You have to start somewhere, so today we're focusing on breakfast. If you eat a cheese or cold cuts sandwich for breakfast every morning, why would your child want anything else? They might not even know it's possible. On the other hand, if your child sees other foods on your plate, they'll sooner or later become interested. But that doesn't mean they'll immediately enjoy eating them with you. It might be a long and tedious process. But it will still be a success even if they smell it after a month and lick a "new" dish after three. Remember that we are developing lifestyle habits in our children, so we should be patient. Over time, your breakfast will surely become much more varied. The basis is a shared family meal where everyone has some choice. Let your child decide on the additions or portion size. This may mean getting up 15 minutes earlier. But what's 15 minutes compared to building healthy lifestyle habits?
So let's get into the details. How can you enrich your family breakfast? Here are 7 ideas for a varied breakfast throughout the week.
Dry sandwiches
Let's start with the simplest and certainly most popular breakfast. Remember that sandwiches don't always mean the same thing. You can change the type of bread: serve rolls, baguettes, white and dark bread, pure grain bread. In Poland, we have a really wide selection in this area. Put a few different side dishes on the table: cheese, sausage, cottage cheese, vegetable pastes, hummus, egg paste, meat or vegetable pate. Of course, not all at once. Two or three suggestions in one meal are enough. For these vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, radishes, sprouts, fresh or pickled cucumber. Have each of you put together their favorite sandwich, then compare them and exchange them for a "bite."
Tip: To spice up sandwiches, you can use one of our spreads, hummus or vegan pates .
Sweet sandwiches
Since we've already discussed salty sandwiches, for a healthy breakfast, try sweet sandwiches. These don't necessarily involve bread with Nutella spread. It's not that simple! There are plenty of other ideas: homemade or store-bought good-quality jams and preserves, peanut butter with banana, cottage cheese with honey. You can also easily make homemade chocolate spread with dates, beans, and cocoa, or dark chocolate and plum chocolate. Don't give your child ready-made sandwiches. Let them choose their favorite side dishes from those available on the table. It's worth encouraging your child to make a sandwich with added protein, such as cottage cheese, which would go well with honey, jam, or preserves. For such a sweet breakfast, it's a good idea to serve fruit on a plate to liven up the meal.
Tip: If you don't have the time or inclination to prepare homemade sweet sandwiches, use the ready-made suggestions in our shop.
oatmeal
Sometimes we associate it with graubura, an unwelcome slush. Nothing could be more wrong! Porridge of the 21st century is more of a dessert than a breakfast . You can use different types of flakes, for example, oats, barley, rye. The same goes for liquid. It can be traditionally cow's milk, but also plant-based, or simply water or fruit juice. To add flavor to the porridge, add chopped dried fruit: apricots, prunes, raisins, dates, figs, and nuts. At the end of cooking, add a protein source, such as cottage cheese. It will give the porridge an interesting taste. Place several types of fruit on the table so that everyone can choose their favorite and add color to your serving. Occasionally, you can pour maple syrup or runny honey over your meal.
Tip: Our shop offers a wide selection of products for preparing different types of oatmeal. Experiment and have fun with your combinations.
eggs
Many breakfast ideas can be conjured up . It can be traditional: from soft-boiled eggs to hard-boiled eggs to scrambled eggs. The latter doesn't always have to be the same. You can season it with chives, mushrooms, onions, or roasted ham. You can also serve fried eggs, poached eggs, or shakshouka for breakfast. Omelettes also taste excellent—savory or sweet, depending on your preference. Additives are important: There should be plenty of vegetables to choose from on the table.
Suggestion: Shakshuka requires a bit more preparation. If you want to save some time, you can use a ready-made base .
toast
Toast doesn't have to be synonymous with simple sliced bread topped with cheese. Try adding cold cuts, fine sausage, or salami. Replace cheese with mozzarella, goat cheese, or feta cheese. You can also add vegetables, such as pickled cucumbers. Serve more vegetables on the table. Try making toast with your child—it's sure to be satisfying. Try French toast, which is a pan-fried bread or egg roll. This is a great way to use up those stale bread in the bread bin, in keeping with the zero-waste philosophy.
Suggestion: For healthier toast, choose organic and organic cheese . You'll find a wide selection at Biogo.
Cake
For people who haven't prepared this type of breakfast before, pancakes can seem time-consuming. They may take a little longer to cook than making a sandwich, but the result is worth it. They can also be a great option for a relaxed weekend breakfast . The simplest solution is to mix flour, eggs, milk, and knead the ingredients. A protein supplement in the form of cottage cheese or cottage cheese is also a good idea. Fry in a grease-free pan and serve as side dishes: high-quality jams and fruit.
Suggestion: Use a variety of flours : whole wheat, millet, buckwheat, spelt, oat, and others. You can find them in the Biogo shop. Mix them up and find your favorite combination.
Select a child
Suggest that your child choose breakfast for the whole family that day! Cheese and ketchup sandwiches? Sausages? There you go! This also applies to the basics and accessories: as always, each household member can choose.
